Gok Wan chats to StyleJunkee about his new range of lingerie for Simply Yours, his love for Brigitte Bardot and the type of woman he designs for…
What was your inspiration behind the collection?
There were three main sources of inspiration behind the collection, the first being mechanics. This was used to form contour lines and to select the best fabrics for the designs.
The second was simply the female silhouette!
Finally, I drew a lot of inspiration from the Chinese film In the Mood for Love. It’s set in Hong Kong in the ’50s and features some gorgeous underwear and is just shot beautifully.
Describe the woman you design for…
Oh, good question! I design for everyone, the everyday woman. I have built an ethos where I want to be inclusive and so ensure all my designs are for everyone.
What is your top style tip?
To have a good honest relationship with the mirror and to respect what it is that you are looking at.
Who is your female style icon?
It has to be Brigitte Bardot simply because of her classic style!
What is your favourite item from your new Simply Yours collection?
That’s a tough one, it makes me feel like a bad parent, I can’t just pick one item! I guess it has to be the Shape Me slip in ivory.
How long did it take to design the collection?
The whole process can take up to 12 months however six of those are hard work due to the mechanics of creating the styles and patterns.
