Exclusive interview with Gary Card, the interior designer behind the Patrón Silver Reindeer pop-up restaurant

Fresh from last year’s success of the Flash pop-up restaurant at London’s Royal Academy, Pablo Flack and David Waddington, the boys behind Bistrotheque, return with the Patrón Silver Reindeer. Blink and you’ll miss it – this year the restaurant is only open for three days from 11th to 13th December, but it’s set to be a spectacle. After all, how could it not be when the interiors are by Gary Card, the illustrator and graphic designer who has worked with everyone from Stella McCartney to Comme des Garçons and Uniqlo? We caught up with him as he puts the finishing touches to the venue in London’s Kings Cross.

So how did this project come about?
Pablo and I have been talking about doing a project together for a while now but something always seems to get in the way. When he called me and offered the chance to do their Christmas event I jumped at the chance, they always make such wonderful parties and it has been great to be a part of one.

What was your inspiration?
Exclusive interview with Gary Card, the interior designer behind the Patrón Silver Reindeer pop-up restaurantI was given one very strict rule for this project – it had to be very Christmassy without using any obvious Christmas icons. No Santa, no snowmen, nothing… although they later let me get away with using a snowflake as the overall theme. I wanted to make a really magical dining experience and the idea of overlapping snowflakes making really dramatic shadow shapes seemed like a wonderful solution. The main inspiration for the overall effect is the artist Cornelia Parker’s Exploding Shed piece ‘Cold Dark Matter’ – for me it is so magical and mysterious. I wanted to make something that has that sense of mystery about it yet feels spectacular, beautiful and above all super festive.

What’s next for you?
I’ve got a few photo shoots and a secret project for Lady Gaga lined up until 23rd December, and then I’m really looking forward to my Christmas break. Work has been pretty mental for the last few months so it will be great to stop and watch some TV. I have no idea what the new year will bring – onwards and upwards.

Lunchtime or evening sittings for the feast can be booked directly from Bistrotheque on 020 8983 7900. Further information is available on www.patronsilverreindeer.com and www.garycardiology.blogspot.com
